eBay Listing Templates: 6 Free, Mobile-Friendly Templates by Category

Laptop on a minimal desk, set up for writing eBay listing templates

Good eBay listing templates are shorter than you think. Buyers read on their phones, eBay strips out scripts and widgets, and the description's real job is to answer questions before they're asked. Here are six free, copy-ready templates for clothing, sneakers, electronics, trading cards, books and home goods, each with a filled-in example, plus a clean HTML layout if you still want one.

What is an eBay listing template?

An eBay listing template is a reusable layout for your item description: the same sections, in the same order, that you fill in for every new item. The best eBay listing templates today are plain text with short headings and bullet points, because most buyers read on a phone and eBay has blocked JavaScript and other active content in listings since 2017.

Below you'll find one universal template, six free category templates with a filled-in example for each, and a clean HTML version if you still want a designed look. This post is only about the description. Your title and item specifics do most of the work in search, so for those see our guides to eBay title optimization and eBay item specifics.

Why simple, mobile-friendly descriptions beat heavy HTML designs

Old eBay templates meant banners, tabs, scrolling galleries and embedded feedback. Most of that no longer works, and what still loads makes the listing worse on a phone.

  • Active content is banned. eBay started phasing out active content (JavaScript, Flash, plug-ins and form actions) from item pages in June 2017. Its JavaScript policy now says active content isn't displayed and isn't allowed in new listings. Scrolling item pickers, embedded feedback, social sharing icons and currency converters all count. If your description contains it, the form shows a "Disallowed JavaScript/HTML Syntax" error and you can't list until you remove it.
  • Phone buyers see a shorter description. eBay's mobile guidance warns that mobile buyers see a shortened version, so important details can be cut off. Its developer documentation puts the mobile snippet at 800 characters, and says that if your description runs longer, the 800 characters shown aren't necessarily the first 800.
  • eBay's own design advice is plain. eBay recommends a 16px base font, nothing smaller than 12px, black text on a white background, bullet points, short lines and an uncluttered layout. It also says to add photos with the photo uploader rather than embedding images in the description.
  • Policies belong in the fields. eBay asks sellers to put payment, shipping and returns in the listing's own fields, not the description, because mobile buyers may only see part of it. Saved business policies fill those fields on every listing for you.
  • The description barely moves search. eBay's search weighs the title, item specifics, price and listing performance far more, as our guide to writing eBay listings with AI explains. The description's job is to answer questions and prevent returns.

The template that sells is one a buyer can scan in ten seconds on a phone.

The universal eBay listing template

Every category template below is built from the same five blocks. If you sell a mix of things, start here.

Template:
[Item name: brand, model, key detail]

Condition
[Overall condition in one line]. [Every flaw, where it is, how big]. [What you tested or cleaned].

Details
• [Size or dimensions]
• [Color, material or main spec]
• [Model, style or part number]

What's included
[Exactly what ships]. Not included: [anything a buyer might expect].

Shipping
[Handling time and how it's packed. Costs and returns stay in your business policies.]

Three habits keep it working. Lead with condition, because "not as described" is where most returns start. Name each flaw and its size ("2 mm scuff on the left toe", not "minor wear"). And don't paste the title in again as the first line of the description; use that space for something new. For condition wording by scenario, see how to write eBay condition descriptions that cut returns.

Electronics

Electronics buyers want to know what you tested, not just that it "works". List every function you checked.

[Brand] [model] [storage or spec], [color], [Wi-Fi, unlocked or carrier]

[Cosmetic condition: scratches, dents, screen marks, with photo numbers].

Collectibles and trading cards

Card buyers judge condition from photos, so the description should point them to the right shots and describe how the card ships. If the card is raw, say the condition is your opinion.

Template:
[Year] [set] [player or character] #[card number] [parallel or rarity] [Raw, or grading company and grade]

Condition
[Raw: corners, edges, surface, centering, in your own words] or [Graded: slab condition and cert number].

Details
• Year and set: [ ]
• Card number: [ ]
• Parallel, rarity or print run: [ ]
• Grade and cert number: [ ] (graded only)

Shipping
[Penny sleeve, top loader, team bag], in a [bubble mailer or box] with tracking.
Example:
2023 Pokemon Scarlet & Violet 151 Charizard ex #199/165 Special Illustration Rare, Raw

Condition
Raw, sleeved straight from the pack. Corners look sharp, no edge whitening seen. Centering looks slightly off left to right. Front and back photographed under direct light. Not graded, so judge condition from the photos.

Details
• Year and set: 2023 Scarlet & Violet 151
• Card number: 199/165
• Rarity: Special Illustration Rare

Shipping
Penny sleeve, top loader and team bag, in a bubble mailer with tracking.

Books and media

For books, records, DVDs and games, the identifier does the heavy lifting. An ISBN or UPC lets eBay match the item to its catalog, and buyers check edition and printing details.

Condition
[Cover or case, spine, pages or disc, dust jacket, writing, highlighting, library stamps].

Details
• ISBN or UPC: [ ]

Shipping

Condition
Very good. Dust jacket has light shelf wear at the top of the spine (photo 3). Binding tight, pages clean, no writing, highlighting or library stamps.

• Publisher, year: Ballantine Books, 2021
• Printing: see copyright page photo for the number line

Shipping
Wrapped in a plastic sleeve and shipped in a rigid mailer.

Home goods

Home items get returned for size surprises and damage in transit. Give dimensions, point to any chip, and say how you'll pack it.

Template:
[Brand] [item] [size or capacity], [color or pattern]

Condition
[Chips, cracks, crazing, scratches, stains, odors]. [Tested how, if it plugs in].

• Material: enameled cast iron
• Marks: size 26 and Le Creuset name cast into the base (photo 8)

Packing

eBay listing template design: a clean HTML version

Static HTML still works. eBay's rules target active content, not basic formatting, so headings, paragraphs, lists and bold are fine. Good ebay listing template design today is restraint: one font, one body size, no fixed widths.

Clean HTML template:
<div style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; color: #000;">
<h3>Condition</h3>
<p>Pre-owned, very good. Light pilling under both arms.</p>
<h3>Measurements (laid flat)</h3>
<ul>
<li>Pit to pit: 22 in</li>
<li>Length: 27.5 in</li>
</ul>
<h3>What's included</h3>
<p>Jacket only.</p>
</div>

Stick to these rules and the template will display well on every screen:

  • No scripts of any kind. No JavaScript, no embedded widgets, no forms, no counters, no auto-playing media.
  • No external files. Don't link to outside stylesheets, fonts or scripts. Keep any styling inline and minimal.
  • No fixed widths. A table or image set to 900 pixels wide forces sideways scrolling on a phone. Let text wrap naturally.
  • No layout tables or tabs. Tabs need scripts and break on mobile. Stack sections one under another.
  • Photos go in the photo uploader. eBay's help pages allow up to 24 per listing, shown in the gallery where buyers look first.

If your description is long, you can mark a mobile summary so phone buyers see the right 800 characters. Wrap it in eBay's schema tags at the top of the HTML (any HTML inside counts toward the 800):

Optional mobile summary (goes at the top):
<div vocab="https://schema.org/" typeof="Product">
<span property="description">Patagonia Better Sweater, Men's M, navy. Very good, light pilling under arms. Pit to pit 22 in, length 27.5 in.</span>
</div>

Most resellers can skip this: eBay's developer docs say a description under 800 characters should display properly on mobile without the tags.

eBay's own tools for templates and descriptions

You don't need a paid template designer. eBay gives you the pieces free:

  • The description editor. The listing form's description box has basic formatting (bold, lists) and an HTML view for pasting code. Paste the plain text templates into the normal view; paste HTML only into the HTML view, or the tags show up as text.
  • Seller Hub listing templates. In Seller Hub you can save a whole listing setup (category, item specifics, policies and description) as a listing template and start new listings from it. eBay's help page says you can keep up to 50 templates.
  • Sell similar. On a sold or active listing, "Sell similar" copies it into a new draft. It's the fastest way to list a second item of the same type.
  • Business policies. Save your shipping, returns and payment settings once and apply them to every listing, so you never type them into the description.
  • The AI description button. eBay's listing flow offers a "Use AI description" option that drafts the text for you to edit. It's free and fine as a starting point; we cover how it works and where it slips in our guide to eBay's AI listing tool.

Template mistakes that cost you sales

  • Leftover details. Copying last week's listing and forgetting to change the size is the classic "not as described" return. Reread before you publish.
  • "See photos for condition." Photos support the description; they don't replace it.
  • Walls of policy text. Paragraphs about returns, payment deadlines and feedback push the useful details out of the mobile view. Let business policies handle it.

Fill a template in seconds instead of minutes

A template fixes the layout, but you still have to write the words for every item. That's the slow part. The Quicklist AI eBay listing generator is a Chrome extension that writes the title, description and tags from a few words or a photo, follows eBay's rules (an 80-character title, a short scannable description), and then fills them into the eBay form with one click. You get 2 free listings to try with no card, and plans start at $2.99 a month (see pricing). It doesn't crosslist or automate anything on eBay; it writes and fills the listing.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get eBay listing templates free?

Yes. The six category templates on this page are free to copy and paste: clothing, sneakers, electronics, trading cards, books and media, and home goods. eBay also lets you save your own listing templates in Seller Hub at no cost, so you can store a filled-in layout and reuse it.

Does eBay still allow HTML listing templates?

Yes, for static formatting. Headings, paragraphs, lists and bold text are fine. What eBay blocks is active content: JavaScript, Flash, plug-ins, form actions and widgets like item pickers or embedded feedback. Listings that include it get a "Disallowed JavaScript/HTML Syntax" error.

When did eBay stop allowing JavaScript in listings?

eBay began phasing out active content, including JavaScript, from item pages in June 2017. Its current JavaScript policy says active content has been removed from existing listings and isn't allowed in new ones.

What is the best eBay listing template design for mobile?

A simple one. eBay recommends a 16px base font, nothing below 12px, black text on white, bullet points and short lines. Stack sections (condition, details, what's included, shipping) one under another, avoid fixed widths and tabs, and keep the whole description under about 800 characters if you can.

How do I save a listing template on eBay?

In Seller Hub, open the Listings tab and choose Listing templates, then create a new template, fill in the details and save it. eBay's help page says you can store up to 50. You can also start a new listing from an existing one with "Sell similar".

Does the eBay item description affect search ranking?

Only a little. eBay search leans on the title, item specifics, price and how the listing performs. A clear description still matters because it answers questions, builds trust and cuts returns, which helps sales.

Should I put shipping and return policies in my eBay description?

No. eBay asks sellers to use the listing's shipping, payment and returns fields instead, because mobile buyers see a shortened description and policy text can get cut off. Save them as business policies so they apply to every listing automatically.
