The eBay AI listing tool, Magical Listing, turns a few photos into a draft listing in the eBay app. It's free, it's now the default for many sellers, and it can save real time. It also misreads items, writes generic copy and only works on eBay. Here's how to use it step by step, how to check its work, and what to do if you'd rather skip it.
What is the eBay AI listing tool?
eBay's AI listing tool is called Magical Listing. You photograph an item in the eBay app and it drafts the title, category, item specifics, condition and a suggested price, which you review and publish. It's free, and alongside it eBay offers an AI description generator, a bulk version for Seller Hub and AI card scanning.
This guide covers eBay's own built-in tools: what each one does, how to use it, where it goes wrong, and when a separate tool makes more sense. If you want the general method for writing eBay listings with any AI (titles, item specifics, Cassini), read our guide to writing eBay listings with AI instead.
eBay's AI listing features in 2026
eBay first showed Magical Listing in 2023 and has been rebuilding and widening it since. By its Q2 2026 results in August, eBay said the latest generation had been expanded to all new and reactivated listers in the UK, and its CEO has said US sellers are creating about 50% more listings per lister since it launched. Here's what exists now:
| Feature | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Magical Listing | Builds a draft from your photos: title, category, item specifics, condition and a price suggestion | eBay app (iOS and Android); default for new and reactivated sellers in the US, expanding in the UK, Germany and Australia |
| AI description generator | Writes an item description you can use, edit or replace | Listing flow ("Use AI description") |
| Magical bulk listing | Turns a batch of photos into several drafts at once | Seller Hub, "Multiple listings from photos" |
| AI backgrounds | Adds an AI-generated backdrop behind your product photo | Photo tools in the listing flow |
| AI card scanning | Identifies a trading card from a scan, shows pricing and helps you list it | eBay app |
| Barcode scan | Fills in product details from a UPC or ISBN | eBay app |
Rollout is uneven. Some features depend on your country, whether you use the app or the website, and whether eBay counts you as a new, casual or business seller. If you don't see one, it may not be on your account yet.
How to use the eBay AI listing tool, step by step
Open the eBay app and tap Sell
Magical Listing lives in the eBay app on iPhone and Android. For new and reactivated sellers it is now the default way to start a listing, so you'll usually land straight in the camera.
Take the photos it asks for
The app suggests which shots to take. Shoot on a plain background in good light, and include the brand tag, size label, model number or barcode. The AI can only identify what it can see, so a clear label photo matters more than a pretty one.
Review the draft
eBay drafts the title, picks a category, fills item specifics and suggests a condition. Check each one. If the AI can't identify the item, you get the regular listing form instead.
Write or generate the description
Depending on your version of the app, the description may be blank or offered as a "Use AI description" option. eBay's own page says you can use the generated text as is, edit it, or treat it as a starting point. Add measurements, flaws and anything the photos can't show.
Check the suggested price
The price suggestion is based on recent eBay sales of similar items. Compare it with sold listings yourself before accepting it, especially for anything rare, graded or in unusual condition.
Set shipping and publish
Confirm the package weight and size, your handling time and returns, then list. Everything stays editable after it's live.
Using the bulk version in Seller Hub
For volume, Seller Hub has a photo-to-drafts flow. Go to Listings, click Create listings and choose "Multiple listings from photos". Pick how many photos each item uses, upload them in that order, and eBay builds one draft per item. It launched for sports trading cards in 2024 and was later widened to most categories. Treat every draft as unfinished until you've checked it.
What eBay's AI does well, and where it slips
To be fair to eBay, the tool solves a real problem. It's free, it lives where you already list, it fills category and item specifics (which a writing tool can't), and it bases the price suggestion on eBay's own sales data. For someone clearing out a closet from their phone, that's a big step up from a blank form.
The limits are just as real:
- It can misidentify the item. In one widely shared test by the eBay news site Value Added Resource, a sea turtle mousepad came back as a ceramic plaque, then a fridge magnet. A wrong identification flows into the title, category and specifics, and you have to clear them out.
- Sizes and categories go wrong. Sellers have reported clothing put in the wrong size range and specifics left blank or set to the wrong value. eBay's own seller news says AI "doesn't always get it right".
- The copy is generic. The AI writes from what it can see and from catalog data. It doesn't know about the stain on the cuff, the battery that lasts two hours, or why your vintage piece is special. Early versions were criticized for inventing details, such as claiming accessories were included when they weren't.
- It only works for eBay. If you also sell on Poshmark, Mercari or Depop, you're writing those listings somewhere else.
- Fixes can take longer than writing. Some experienced sellers say correcting a bad draft is slower than their old process. The tool is built for speed on easy, recognizable items.
You're responsible for what's published. If the AI's title, condition or specifics are wrong and the buyer opens a "not as described" return, that's on your account, not the AI's. Check every field.
Can you turn off eBay's AI listing tool?
At the time of writing there's no official setting to switch Magical Listing off, and eBay hasn't documented an opt-out. What you can do:
- Use the website. The desktop listing form at ebay.com still lets you list without the photo-first AI flow.
- Start from "Sell similar" or "Sell one like this". Copying an existing listing skips the camera step, and sellers report it bypasses Magical Listing.
- Just don't tap the AI description. The AI description is optional. Write your own, or paste from one of our free eBay listing templates.
- Edit anything it writes. Every AI field is editable before and after you publish. Delete what's wrong and type over it.
One caution from earlier reports: tapping the AI description button on an item where you've already written a description may replace your text. Copy your version first.
A 60-second check before you publish an AI draft
- Item and model: is it the right product, brand and model number?
- Title: does it use most of the 80 characters, in the order buyers search? Our eBay title guide has the formula.
- Category: is it the most specific one?
- Item specifics: are size, color, material and department filled and correct?
- Condition: does the grade match reality, and does the condition note name every flaw?
- Description: does it claim anything you can't see in the photos, like included accessories?
- Price: does it match recent sold listings, not just the suggestion?
When a separate AI listing tool makes more sense
If you only sell on eBay and mostly list from your phone, eBay's tool is free and good enough to start with. A separate tool earns its keep when you sell on more than one marketplace, work on a laptop, or want copy that sounds like a person wrote it.
That's what Quicklist AI is for. It's a Chrome extension that writes the title, description and tags from a few words or a photo, tuned to each marketplace's rules, then fills them into the listing form. The same item gets an 80-character, keyword-first title on eBay and a casual, hashtag-friendly version on Depop. Try it on eBay with the eBay AI listing generator.
| eBay's AI listing tool | Quicklist AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free, built into eBay | 2 free listings, then from $2.99/mo |
| Marketplaces | eBay only | 10: eBay, Poshmark, Depop, Mercari, Vinted, Etsy, Grailed, Facebook Marketplace, Whatnot, Amazon |
| Starts from | Photos, mainly in the app | A few words or a photo, in Chrome |
| Fills category, specifics, price | Yes, drafts them | No, writes title, description and tags |
| Writing style | One generic style | Five tones (Professional, Casual, Luxury, Trendy, Minimalist), short to long |
| Fills the listing form | Yes, it is the form | Yes, "Fill Listing" on each site |
| Crosslisting or sync | No | No |
Plenty of sellers use both: Magical Listing to get the category and specifics drafted, then a writing tool for a stronger title and description. Neither one crosslists or delists for you. If that's what you need, see the best eBay listing tools for 2026 or our comparison of AI listing tools. Frequently asked questions
Does eBay have an AI listing tool?
Yes. eBay's Magical Listing tool in the eBay app creates a draft listing from your photos, with a title, category, item specifics, condition and suggested price. eBay also has an AI description generator, a bulk photo-to-listing tool in Seller Hub and AI card scanning for trading cards.
Is the eBay AI listing tool free?
Yes. eBay's AI listing features are built into the app and Seller Hub at no extra cost. Your normal eBay selling fees still apply when an item sells.
How do I turn off AI on the eBay app?
At the time of writing eBay doesn't offer a setting to turn Magical Listing off. Sellers get around it by listing on the eBay website, starting from "Sell similar" on an existing listing, or editing over the AI's fields. The AI description is optional, so you can skip it and write your own.
Can I edit an eBay AI-generated description?
Yes. eBay says you can use the AI description as written, edit it or use it as a starting point. You can change it before publishing and revise the listing any time after it's live.
Why did eBay's AI pick the wrong item or category?
The AI identifies items from your photos, so unclear shots, missing labels or unusual items lead to wrong guesses. Retake the photo with the brand tag, model number or barcode in view, or fix the title and category by hand.
Does eBay's AI listing tool work on desktop?
The photo-first Magical Listing experience is mainly in the iOS and Android apps. On desktop, Seller Hub has the bulk "Multiple listings from photos" option, and the regular listing form may offer an AI description depending on your account.
Is there an AI listing tool that works on eBay and other sites?
eBay's tool only works on eBay. Quicklist AI is a Chrome extension that writes titles, descriptions and tags for 10 marketplaces, including eBay, Poshmark, Depop and Mercari, and fills them into each listing form. It doesn't crosslist or sync inventory.
