What Sells on Etsy in 2026: Item Types, Vintage Rules and How to Check Demand

Rack of vintage clothing, the kind of item that sells on Etsy when it is 20 or more years old

What sells on Etsy is narrower than most resellers expect. Etsy only allows items you made, designed, handpicked or sourced, so it rewards handmade work, true vintage, craft supplies, personalized pieces and your own digital designs. Here are Etsy's own rules, what resellers can actually list there, and a step-by-step way to check demand yourself without guessing.

What sells on Etsy: the short answer

What sells on Etsy is anything you made, designed, handpicked or sourced yourself: handmade goods, vintage items at least 20 years old, craft and party supplies, digital downloads of your own design, personalized items and seasonal pieces. New, mass-produced goods you bought to flip do not belong there, and Etsy removes them.

For resellers, that narrows it to two lanes: true vintage and craft supplies. Below are Etsy's own rules, the item types that fit each one, and how to check demand before you list. Etsy does not publish sales by category, so this guide sticks to what Etsy says and what you can check yourself.

Etsy's rule: made, designed, handpicked or sourced

Under Etsy's Creativity Standards, every item has to fit one of four groups, and listings show a matching label to buyers.

GroupWhat fitsExamples
Made by a sellerPhysical items you make by hand or with tools such as a 3D printer, CNC machine or Cricut. Hand-altered and hand-assembled items count.Candles, ceramics, jewelry, upcycled denim, embroidered sweatshirts
Designed by a sellerYour original designs, sold as digital downloads or printed onto products by a production partner.Printable planners, wall art files, print-on-demand shirts with your art
Handpicked by a sellerVintage items at least 20 years old, items from nature and curated collections you selected.1990s band tees, mid-century glassware, a curated box of seashells
Sourced by a sellerCraft supplies, party supplies and items personalized with the buyer's own text or image.Fabric, yarn, beads, vintage buttons, custom name ornaments

Everything still has to follow Etsy's prohibited items policy, and most services and rentals are not allowed.

Item types that sell on Etsy

Etsy's main categories give a fair picture of what shoppers browse: jewelry and accessories, clothing, home and living, wedding and party, toys, art and collectibles, craft supplies and tools, and a dedicated vintage section. Within those, these are the item types that match how Etsy is built.

Handmade goods

This is the core of Etsy. Items that are clearly made by a person, in materials and designs you would not find at a big-box store, are what Etsy shoppers come for. Handmade categories are also crowded, so a specific angle (a material, a style, a niche hobby) matters more than a broad one.

Vintage

Etsy has a vintage section and a buyer base that searches by decade, brand and material. Clothing, home decor, kitchenware, jewelry, toys, books and paper ephemera are all common vintage listings. Buyers here tend to read details, so a precise era and honest condition notes do a lot of the selling. Our guide to listing vintage and thrift finds covers how to describe era and wear.

Craft supplies

Fabric, yarn, beads, findings, buttons, patterns and tools are allowed even when they are commercially made, because their main purpose is helping someone make something new. Destash lots from estate sales often land here.

Digital downloads

Printables, templates, planners, patterns and digital art can sell on Etsy, but they must be your own designs. Reselling files you bought or found does not qualify. If you used AI to create a design, Etsy requires you to say so in the listing.

Personalized items

Items customized with the buyer's name, date, photo or text are a natural fit for Etsy, and they fall under "sourced by a seller" when you personalize a base item. Note that adding a gift tag or card to an unaltered store-bought item does not count.

Seasonal items

Holiday decor, gifts, Halloween pieces and wedding items get searched around their dates, and gift searches build through November and December. List seasonal stock well before the peak so it has time to collect clicks and favorites. Our Q4 holiday flipping calendar lays out the timing.

What counts as vintage on Etsy

Etsy's rule is simple: vintage items must be at least 20 years old. In late 2026, that means made in 2006 or earlier.

  • Vintage-style is not vintage. A new item designed to look old, or a recent reproduction, cannot be listed as vintage.
  • Etsy can ask for proof. Its vintage policy says it may request documentation of an item's age, such as photos of vintage indicators like labels, tags, maker's marks or construction details.
  • Other listings are not proof. Another seller listing the same item as vintage does not verify yours.

If you are not sure of an item's age, research the label, union tag, copyright date or maker's mark before you list it. Our guides to dating vintage band tees and dating vintage Levi's walk through the common clues.

What counts as handmade on Etsy

To list in Etsy's handmade categories, you have to be involved in making or designing the item. Etsy says items made by hand or with tools you operate (including computerized ones like a Cricut or 3D printer) count, as do hand-altered and hand-assembled items. You should use your own photos.

If you design items and a production partner makes them, such as a print-on-demand company, that is allowed, but you must disclose the partner on those listings. What is not allowed is listing something as handmade when you did not make or design it.

What resellers can sell on Etsy

Etsy defines reselling as selling a commercially available item you did not make or design, and it does not allow it, with three exceptions: craft and party supplies, vintage items over 20 years old that you handpicked, and themed gift baskets you selected and packed yourself. Drop shipping is not allowed, except for craft and party supplies.

A 1990s Levi's jacket or a 1970s Pyrex dishNew or recent-season brand clothing (for example, last year's Lululemon leggings)

So if most of your inventory is modern thrifted clothing, Etsy is the wrong home for it. Those items fit Poshmark, Mercari, Depop, Vinted or eBay. Our guide to the best reselling apps and websites shows where each kind of item fits, and what sells on Vinted covers everyday clothing.

How to check demand on Etsy yourself

You do not need a paid tool to get a decent read on demand. Work through these steps for any item before you list a batch of them.

1

Watch the search bar suggestions

Type the item name slowly into Etsy's search bar. The autocomplete suggestions reflect what shoppers search, and the extra words they add (a decade, a color, "for him") show how buyers phrase it.

2

Read the badges on page one

Search the phrase and look at the top results. Etsy says a Bestseller badge means high sales volume over the past six months, and an "in carts" note means other shoppers have the item in their carts. Lots of badges on similar items suggest real demand. No badges and pages of near-identical listings suggest a slow or crowded niche.

3

Check the shops behind the listings

Open a few shops selling similar items. Most shop pages show a sales count and reviews, which tell you whether this kind of item is selling steadily for someone.

4

Compare prices with sold data elsewhere

Etsy does not show sold prices for other shops' items. Check eBay sold listings for the same item to see what buyers actually paid, then price with Etsy's fees in mind. Our guide on how to price items to sell covers the method.

5

Use a keyword tool for estimates

eRank and EverBee both have limited free plans that estimate search volume or listing sales. They are estimates, not Etsy data, so use them to compare ideas rather than predict income.

6

Test with a few listings

Listing on Etsy costs a small fee per listing (about $0.20 at the time of writing, plus fees when it sells, so check Etsy's current fee page). List three to five pieces, watch views and favorites in your Shop Manager stats for a few weeks, and only then source more.

Once you know what to sell, list it well

Finding the right item is half the job. The other half is getting it found. Etsy matches searches on your title, 13 tags, category and attributes, so read our Etsy SEO tips for the current title guidance and a filled-in set of 13 tags. Clear photos matter just as much, and our phone photo guide works for most vintage pieces.

If you want the title, description and tags drafted to Etsy's limits from a few words or a photo, the Etsy AI listing generator in Quicklist AI writes them and fills them into the Etsy listing form. It covers 10 marketplaces and you can try 2 listings free, no card needed. It writes listings only, so the vintage and sourcing checks above are still on you.

New mass-produced goods and drop-shipped products are not allowed.

How old does something have to be to sell as vintage on Etsy?

At least 20 years old. In 2026 that means made in 2006 or earlier. Items made to look vintage do not qualify, and Etsy may ask for proof of age, such as photos of labels or maker's marks.

How do I know if something will sell on Etsy?

Check the Etsy search bar suggestions for the item, look for Bestseller badges and in-cart notes on page-one results, open a few competing shops to see their sales and reviews, then test with a handful of listings and watch views and favorites in your Shop Manager stats.
