Etsy SEO Tips for 2026: Titles, 13 Tags and Attributes That Rank

Laptop on a minimal desk ready for writing Etsy SEO titles and tags

These Etsy SEO tips are built on how Etsy search works right now: short, clear titles instead of keyword-stuffed ones, all 13 tags used as phrases, attributes that count as tags, and a few ranking factors most sellers ignore. You will also get a filled-in title and 13 tags for a real vintage item, free and paid ways to research keywords, and a holiday checklist.

Etsy SEO tips: the short answer

Etsy SEO comes down to two jobs. First, get your listing matched to the words shoppers type, using your title, 13 tags, category and attributes. Second, earn a higher spot among the matched listings with good photos, a fair shipping price, strong reviews and a listing people actually click and buy.

The rest of this guide shows how to do both, with a filled-in title and 13 tags you can copy, the free and paid ways to research Etsy SEO keywords, and what to change before the holiday rush peaks.

How Etsy search works today

Etsy describes its search in two phases: query matching, then ranking.

Phase 1: query matching

When a shopper searches "wool board shirt", Etsy pulls every listing whose title, tags, categories and attributes match those words. Etsy also says it reads keywords in your description, though its own guidance still calls the title, tags, categories and attributes essential. If a word is nowhere in those fields, your listing is not in the running for that search, no matter how good it is.

Phase 2: ranking

Etsy then orders the matched listings. The factors Etsy talks about publicly are:

  • Relevance: how closely your title, tags and attributes match the exact search.
  • Listing quality: how shoppers respond when they see your listing (clicks, favorites, purchases). Your first photo and price drive most of this.
  • Recency: new listings get a small, temporary boost while Etsy learns how buyers react, and renewed listings get a smaller one. Etsy says the boost lasts hours to days and that renewing listings just for it is not an effective strategy.
  • Customer and market experience: a shop-level score built from your reviews, message response and cases, plus a complete shop (policies, About section).
  • Shipping price: for US domestic listings with fixed shipping, Etsy has prioritized listings with shipping under $6 (including free shipping) since October 2024.
  • Personalization: results are tuned to each shopper's past behavior, so two people can see different results for the same search.

Etsy's Search Visibility page in Shop Manager shows which of these you are failing on, listing by listing. Check it before you rewrite anything.

How to write an Etsy title in 2026

Etsy titles can be up to 140 characters, but Etsy no longer wants you to fill them. In its August 2025 title guidance, Etsy asked sellers to write short, clear titles that are easy to scan, and suggested fewer than 15 words. That is a recommendation, not a hard limit, and Etsy has not told sellers to rewrite titles that already sell well.

What Etsy's guidance asks for:

  • Name the item plainly first. "Wool shirt", "ceramic mug", "gold hoop earrings".
  • Put the important traits next: brand, era, material, color, size.
  • Move occasions and recipients to tags ("gift for him", "Christmas gift") unless they define the item, like a birthday candle.
  • Cut subjective words such as "perfect", "beautiful" or "stunning". They belong in the description.
  • Do not repeat words, and leave out price, shipping and sale details. Etsy badges those in search on its own.

Etsy also added an optional AI title tool on the Search Visibility page for English-language shops. If you try it, download a CSV of your listings first so you keep the old keywords to move into tags. If your titles look like a string of 12 comma-separated phrases, test the short version on a few listings before changing your whole shop. Our guide to listing titles that rank across marketplaces shows how this differs from eBay, where you still want all 80 characters.

Etsy SEO tags: how to use all 13

Every listing gets 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. Tags can use letters, numbers and spaces, plus apostrophes and hyphens inside a word. Use all 13. An empty tag slot is a search you have opted out of.

Use multi-word phrases

Etsy encourages short descriptive phrases over single words. "Loop collar shirt" matches the shopper who types exactly that, and it still contributes the words "loop", "collar" and "shirt" to other searches. A single-word tag like "shirt" competes with millions of listings and says almost nothing.

Do not copy the title word for word

Etsy matches across all your fields together, so a tag that repeats your title phrase exactly is mostly a wasted slot. Use tags for the other ways people describe the item: synonyms, styles, eras, uses and gift searches.

Attributes and categories count as tags

Etsy says the attributes you fill in (color, material, size, occasion, holiday and so on) act like tags, and that choosing a specific category can cover some terms for you. So if you set the primary color to Blue and the size to Medium, you do not need "blue shirt" or "medium" in your tags. Fill every attribute that applies first, then spend your 13 tags on what attributes cannot say.

Mix broad and specific

A good set has a few mid-size phrases (what the item is), several specific phrases (brand, era, style, feature) and two or three buyer-intent phrases ("gift for him", "christmas gift dad"). Etsy's own help page calls tags a good place for those gift and occasion searches.

Filled-in example: title plus 13 tags

Say you thrifted a vintage Pendleton wool board shirt in blue plaid, men's medium, dated to the 1970s by its label. Here is how it would look under Etsy's current guidance.

Title (11 words):
Vintage Pendleton Wool Board Shirt, 1970s Blue Plaid Flannel, Men's Medium

Category:
The most specific men's shirt category Etsy offers for button-up shirts

Attributes:
Primary color: Blue. Secondary color: the second color in the plaid. Size: M. Material: wool

Description (first lines):
A 1970s Pendleton board shirt in 100% virgin wool, blue plaid with a loop collar and two flap pockets. Label reads Made in USA. Measures 22 inches pit to pit and 29 inches long. Light pilling at the cuffs, no holes or stains.
13 tags (all 20 characters or less):
pendleton wool shirt loop collar shirt 70s wool shirt surf flannel mens plaid overshirt 1970s menswear wool shirt jacket camp collar flannel americana workwear fall layering shirt 60s surf style gift for him christmas gift dad

Notice what is not in the tags: "vintage pendleton" and "board shirt" are already in the title, and "blue" and "medium" are covered by attributes. Only add "made in usa" style terms when the label actually says so, and only date an item to a decade you can back up. For dating clues on clothing, see our vintage denim listing guide and our guide to vintage band tee listings.

Descriptions: write for the buyer, then for search

Etsy has said since 2022 that search reads keywords in your description, and it suggests putting relevant keywords in the opening sentences in plain language rather than copying your title or tag list. Google also shows the opening text of Etsy listings, so those first lines do double duty.

A simple order that works: what it is and the key traits in one or two sentences, then measurements, then condition and flaws, then care or shipping notes. Flaws belong near the top. Clear condition notes protect your reviews, and reviews feed the shop score that Etsy uses in ranking. Our guide on using every listing field for search covers this field by field.

How to research Etsy SEO keywords

1. The Etsy search bar

Type the item name slowly into Etsy's search bar and note the suggestions. They come from real shopper searches, so "pendleton board shirt" leading to suggestions like a size or a decade tells you how buyers phrase it. Then search those phrases and read the titles of the listings at the top that carry Bestseller or Popular now badges.

2. Your own Shop Manager stats

Stats in Shop Manager show the Etsy search terms that brought shoppers to your listings. These are the only first-party keyword numbers you will get from Etsy. They only show terms you already rank for, so use them to double down on what works, not to find new demand. The Search Visibility page sits alongside this and flags listing problems such as a low-resolution first photo or a missing category.

3. Etsy SEO keywords tools: eRank, EverBee and Marmalead

Etsy does not publish search volumes, so every third-party Etsy SEO keywords tool shows estimates built from its own data. Treat their numbers as a way to compare phrases, not as exact counts.

ToolWhat it is good forFree option
eRankKeyword ideas, estimated search and competition, listing audits, tracking your own shopYes, a limited free plan
EverBeeA Chrome extension that estimates sales and revenue for listings you see on Etsy, plus keyword researchYes, a limited free plan
MarmaleadKeyword research focused on search trends, engagement and seasonalityNo free plan, paid only (check the site for a current trial)

Prices change often, so check each tool's own pricing page. For most resellers, eRank's free plan plus the Etsy search bar is enough to start.

These tools find keywords. They do not write the listing. If you want the title, description and 13 tags drafted to Etsy's limits from a few words or a photo, the Etsy AI listing generator in Quicklist AI does that and fills them into the Etsy form. It does not research search volume, so pair it with one of the tools above.

Holiday-season Etsy SEO: what to do in November and December

Gift searches climb through November and December, and so do searches by sellers looking for Etsy SEO tips. If you are reading this in early November, you still have time.

  • Swap tags, not titles. Etsy wants occasions in tags, so trade two or three evergreen tags for gift phrases now ("gift for him", "stocking stuffer", "christmas gift mom") and set the holiday and occasion attributes where they apply.
  • List new stock steadily. New listings get a short boost, so listing a few items a day through the season gives you more fresh chances than one big batch.
  • Keep US shipping under $6 or offer free shipping on fixed-price shipping profiles, since Etsy prioritizes those listings for US domestic searches.
  • Answer messages fast. Response rate feeds your customer experience score during the busiest weeks.
  • Undo it in January. Put the evergreen tags back after the holidays, then rotate in Valentine's Day phrases where they fit.

Common Etsy SEO mistakes

  1. Stuffing the title. Long, repetitive titles go against Etsy's current guidance and are harder for shoppers to read.
  2. Leaving tags empty or using single words. Fill all 13 with phrases.
  3. Spending tags on what attributes already cover, like color and size.
  4. Repeating the same 13 tags on every similar listing. Vary them so your listings cover more searches instead of competing for the same ones.
  5. Renewing listings over and over to chase the recency boost. Etsy says that does not work as a strategy.
  6. A weak first photo. It drives the clicks that feed listing quality. Our cover photo guide shows what gets clicked.
  7. Calling something vintage that is under 20 years old. Etsy requires vintage items to be at least 20 years old and can remove listings that are not. See what sells on Etsy for the full rules.

If Etsy is one of several places you sell, keep in mind that each marketplace wants a different title and tag format. Our guide to the best reselling apps compares where each kind of item does best, and Quicklist AI starts with 2 free listings if you want drafts tuned to each one.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Etsy SEO tips for beginners?

Fill in every attribute and pick the most specific category, write a short title that names the item and its key traits, use all 13 tags as multi-word phrases that do not repeat the title, and put a sharp, well-lit first photo up front. Then check the Search Visibility page in Shop Manager for anything Etsy flags.

How many tags can you use on Etsy, and how long can they be?

You get 13 tags per listing, each up to 20 characters. Tags can include letters, numbers and spaces, and you can use apostrophes and hyphens inside words but not at the start of a tag.

Should Etsy SEO tags repeat the words in my title?

Not word for word. Etsy matches searches across your title, tags, category and attributes together, so repeating your exact title phrase as a tag wastes a slot. Use tags for synonyms, styles, eras and gift searches instead.

What is the best Etsy SEO keywords tool?

There is no single best one. eRank has a useful free plan for keyword ideas and listing audits, EverBee is a Chrome extension known for estimating listing sales, and Marmalead is a paid keyword tool focused on trends. All of them estimate, since Etsy does not publish search volume. The Etsy search bar and your own Shop Manager stats are free and come straight from Etsy.

How do I find Etsy SEO keywords for free?

Type your item into the Etsy search bar and note the suggestions, read the titles of top listings with Bestseller or Popular now badges, and check the search terms in your Shop Manager stats. eRank's free plan adds estimated search and competition for a limited number of lookups.

How long should an Etsy title be?

The limit is 140 characters, but Etsy's current guidance suggests fewer than 15 words: the item name first, then key traits like brand, material, color and size. Leave occasions, recipients and words like "perfect" out of the title.

Do attributes count as tags on Etsy?

Yes. Etsy says attributes such as color, material and occasion act like tags for search matching, so you do not need to repeat them in your 13 tags. Fill them in first, then use your tags for terms attributes cannot cover.
